Altura came to my attention when it was voted as one of the global selection on The World’s 50 Best Restaurant site and sit on the very top on Eater.com’s 38 Essential Seattle restaurants list. They even described a counter seating as “arguably the best seat in any Seattle restaurant.” With credentials like that, I’m interested.
Altura is a modern Italian restaurant in Seattle and according to my sources, its tasting menu is supposed to be amazing. I therefore convinced my friends that if you’re buying a Porsche, skip the Boxster and go all out for the 911. And so should you.
According to those same sources, getting a counter seating is recommended, and after this experience, I say it’s a must. It was pretty much like getting the coveted chef’s table and watching the chefs cook and plate with laser-like precision – all within three feet in front of you – was a show in itself especially if you’re a foodie. The chefs were amazingly focused and disciplined as if they’re performing surgery – we were interested in what the food would taste like with the bar being set so high.
Overall I was very impressed with the menu. Each course was cooked and plated with so much care. There were no mundane “filler” courses: each course has its own intricate presentation, unique cooking techniques, and depths of flavors. Each plate was interesting enough so that we are always wondering what will surprise us next.
