Chicago: Calumet Fisheries

We had some extra spare time in Chicago. We had a car. So we decided to take the scenic route, tour the south side, and stop by this Anthony Bourdain-recommended, take-out only outpost that specializes in smoked fish.

With no seatings or bathrooms, this was a take-out only place. It was also out of our way – very out in fact. As we made the drive in our rented Mustang, the tall buildings of the Chicago downtown core became smaller and smaller behind us. The locale was replaced with old, run down buildings from Grand Theft Auto. We were in the South Side.

We ordered in the small building and because it was so cold and windy, we had to pile back into our tiny Mustang to devour our bounty. It was a rental and the car wasn’t ours so it’s all good.

Trout. Sadly, I’m not having the same experience as other people because the trout that I got was cold and almost tasteless. I could detect a remnant of the smoky taste but that was it. I do like the texture and taste on the skin though. But other than that, pretty disappointing because I was expecting a lot.
